Looks
Its attractive looks - sharp lines, slim lights and Aston Martin-style front grill - play a large part in its success, as does the well thought out interior. The controls are housed in a central panel with an easy to use touchscreen (standard on all but the entry-level model) giving a simple, uncluttered look. Good quality plastics and details like the soft-close grab handles add to the high-quality feel.

Practicality
Adults fit comfortably in the back seats, the doors open wide and there are well placed storage compartments. The narrow windows give the Focus a dash of style, but they make it dark in the back - and the boot isn't much larger than that of the smaller Ford Fiesta.

Driving
The Focus is one of the most enjoyable small family cars to drive, thanks to a firm yet comfortable ride and sharp, responsive steering, but the manual gearbox can feel sticky at times. If parking is your nemesis you can opt for large-car technology that enables the car to park itself for you!

Safety
The Focus was named best in class by safety experts at Euro NCAP and was the first car to win four of its Advanced Safety Rewards for technology like Emergency Assistance - which automatically uses the driver's phone and GPS coordinates to let the emergency services know there's been an accident, potentially saving critical time. It comes with six airbags and a full five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

Running costs
The Focus is well priced compared to rivals, but it's worth negotiating with Ford dealers on price and extras. The engines - apart from the most sporty - offer low emissions, meaning low road tax, but fuel economy across the range isn't the most impressive in its class. Our favourite engine is the 1.5-litre diesel which is free to tax: Ford claims it offers up to 74mpg.

GH verdict
The Focus is an accomplished all rounder, able to withstand the rigours of family motoring. We think the entry-level Studio model feels too basic, while the Zetec versions offer the best value in terms of extras.
